Welcome to our short review of the awesome Sion Sono horror film Exte: Hair Extentions
What’s this movie about?
When you think of weird horror movies, this one definitely is right up there!
A mysterious, hairless and organ-less body is found in a shipping container at the wharf. The body is buried between tonnes of human hair.
A creepy coroner with a fetish for hair steals the body, and it mysteriously starts regrowing its hair.
At the same time, a young hairdressing apprentice is reluctantly forced to look after her niece after her sister abandons her at her door steps, eventually developing a strong bond with her.
The creepy coroner starts selling the hair growing from the body to local salons as hair extensions, however the hair extensions end up taking over the bodies of the women they are transplanted on, with very gory and violent side effects.
I told you it was weird, but surprisingly, it all makes sense.
Is it Worth Watching?
If you’re a horror fan who is just sick of slasher and jump scares movies and want to see something completely different, then I can’t recommend this movie enough.
It’s a bit rough around the edges, especially in the effects and acting department, but it’s a hell of a fun ride.
Starring Chiaki Kuriyama, who if you are new to Japanese movies you’ll probably recognise from Kill Bill, but who struck fame in the awesome 2000 movie Battle Royale, as the main character Yuko and the now veteran actor Ren Osugi as Yamazaki, the demented and creepy coroner who admittedly is the most interesting character in this movie.
This movie is exactly the kind of “weird” horror movie you’d expect from Japan. And if you are bald man like me, you’ll probably be glad you never visit a hairdresser or have the need for hair extensions!
I give it a thumbs up.
