When Top Gun gets banned in your country, the next best thing is to make your own version.
An elite pilot – it’s always an elite pilot – is chosen the become China’s next head test pilot of a new fighter jet. Test flight after test flight ensures, until we all assume they wait for the call to go to war and blow up people in a country that just wants democracy
We just made that part of the plot up, but rest assured there will be a lot of drama and tension in this movie to go along with all the CGI jet fighter scenes.
Helming his first ever movie is Liu Xiaoshi, who is also the co-writer of the film and I assume is an avid fan of the original Top Gun.
Before we get to the cast, the executive producer is Han Han, who was quite popular for his down to earth comedy movies like Pegasus (2019) and Duckweed (2017), until he directed the Chinese new year flop Only Fools Rush In (2022)
Leading the way in the Maverick role, or whatever they’re going to call him, is Yibo Wang who has mostly been in TV series like Legend of Fei (2020, The Untamed (2019) and Love Actually (2017)
Gruff looking Hu Jun is looking particularly gruff in this film, last seen in Battle At Lake Changjin (2021) and the Curse of Turandot (2021) amongst other hits
And proving her versatility is Dongyu Zhou from Better Days (2019), and the upcoming Trending Topic (2022) and Fire On The Plain (2022). Did you also know that when she was 9, she was one of the voices in the Chinese dub of Spirited Away?
Currently no release date is set for this except a tentative 2022.
