J-horror fans are waking up this morning to the news that a new Sakado movie is in production from Kadokawa Pictures.
With the video game inspired title “SADAKO DX”, the latest in the horror franchise spanning almost 25 years is set to release in Japanese autumn, or fall for you Americans, in 2022 – that makes its sometime around August to October if there are no hiccups.
It’s currently in post-production, with the filming already wrapped up, and at this stage only the director, lead actress and plot have been revealed.
Taking on the lead role of Fuka Ichijo is Fuka Koshiba, who might be familiar to those heavily into Japanese TV series, with roles in comedy fantasy series Yokai Sharehouse, but for those with a keen eye she starred as the titular character Kiki in the 2014 Takashi Shimizu live action remake of the classic Ghibli film Kiki’s Delivery Service, where she also won the winner of Best New Talent category at the Blue Ribbon awards.
Directing duties will be handed over to Hisashi Kimura, who also has a long string of TV series to his name but was the man behind the 2020 thriller Masked Ward.
What’s the story about, you might be asking? Well in Sadako DX we will follow student Fuka Ichijo, a genius with an IQ of 200 who decides to watch the cursed video and solve the mysteries of the curse of Sadako. If anyone could solve the mystery, it would be someone with an IQ of 200, however you’d think with an IQ that high, they probably shouldn’t watch the video in the first place.
Anyway, who are we to judge? Expect to hear and see more about this movie shortly.
