Welcome to our short review of the surreal Sion Sono film The Whispering Star

What’s this movie about?

A human-like android, whose job is as a space courier delivering packages to humans on distant planets, ponders her existence, and the existence of the human race, while spending the time on her rented space craft travelling to her next destination.

When she reaches her destinations, she gets the opportunity to meet and interact with real humans on their desolate planet landscapes.

Along her journey she interacts with the AI on her spaceship which eventually satisfying her curiosity to discover what the contents of the packages are that she is tasked to deliver.

Is it Worth Watching?

In regards to Sion Sono’s catalogue of movies, this one is probably one of the strangest, yet it seems rather well known.

I admit I didn’t know anything about this movie until it arrived in my mailbox, and the synopsis did make it sounds very interesting.

But it’s a slow movie and not much happens in the first 30 to 40 minutes, and this could frustrate for those unfamiliar with both Sono movies and Japanese cinema in general.

If you are a fan of Megumi Kagurazaka, and if you love Sono movies you need to be a fan of hers since they are married and she’s been in around 10 of his films, she takes the lead role of Yoko Suzuki, the android courier, and as always does a terrific job.

Beautifully presented in black and white with a slight sepia tone, there is only one brief shot of colour, which comes as a pleasant and unexpected surprise half way through the movie.

I give it a thumbs up.
